Son luz, escenograf\u00eda. Lo verdadero est\u00e1 atr\u00e1s: diplomas enmarcados, placas, un Pensador de yeso, la foto familiar, un auto de colecci\u00f3n en miniatura. Ah\u00ed se sienta Alfonso Alberto Gonz\u00e1lez Fern\u00e1ndez, 64 a\u00f1os, camisa azul, bigote blanco, mocasines lustrados, en una silla de bejuco. Abre las manos y dibuja en el aire. Hijo de dos maestros \u2014un normalista de civismo al que recuerda siempre leyendo y una educadora de preescolar\u2014, fue el primer nieto en pisar una universidad. Dud\u00f3 entre ingenier\u00eda y arquitectura. Su t\u00edo Ir\u00e1n Fern\u00e1ndez, dentista, zanj\u00f3 el asunto: las matem\u00e1ticas son como entrenar un deporte, se dominan con ejercicio.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>La cueva, las sombras, el regreso<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Egres\u00f3 en 1985. Se acerc\u00f3 al Colegio de Ingenieros Civiles del Sureste por una duda menor \u2014c\u00f3mo cobrar unos honorarios\u2014 y se qued\u00f3 treinta a\u00f1os. De ah\u00ed salt\u00f3 a la Federaci\u00f3n nacional, donde gan\u00f3 por unanimidad, y despu\u00e9s al Consejo Mundial: nueve a\u00f1os, 52 pa\u00edses, una firma con la Unesco que le pronosticaron en diez a\u00f1os y cerr\u00f3 en seis meses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00c9l lo explica con Plat\u00f3n. Salir de la caverna, ver qu\u00e9 proyecta las sombras y volver a contarlo. \u00abLa t\u00e9cnica no tiene colores\u00bb, repite: el agua es agua para todos, la luz es luz para todos. Esa neutralidad le abri\u00f3 puertas y le cerr\u00f3 otras. Cuando en Chiapas le preguntaron por las empresas fantasma, respondi\u00f3 que mientras fueran fantasmas no pod\u00eda opinar; hac\u00edan falta datos verificables.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>El deseo del genio<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pero el regreso tuvo costo. Su t\u00edo se lo advirti\u00f3 y se lo repiti\u00f3 un viernes, ya vencido por un c\u00e1ncer de p\u00e1ncreas, un d\u00eda antes de morir: \u00abno regreses, aqu\u00ed no hay nada que demostrar\u00bb. Y le dej\u00f3 el cuento: un yucateco frota una l\u00e1mpara, aparece un genio que cumple un solo deseo, pero le dar\u00e1 el doble a su peor enemigo. El yucateco pide que le saquen un ojo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gonz\u00e1lez Fern\u00e1ndez lo enmarca con una frase que un maestro le hered\u00f3 hace d\u00e9cadas: M\u00e9xico es pa\u00eds de toreros y boxeadores, oficios de uno solo contra el mundo. Detesta la oficina con aire acondicionado; prefiere el pie de obra. Guarda un consejo de un alcalde como quien guarda una plomada: el lugar que usted no ocupa, lo ocupar\u00e1 otro. Y otro m\u00e1s, de un desconocido en una fiesta: la suerte pasa cinco cent\u00edmetros sobre la cabeza de todos, as\u00ed que nunca dejen de brincar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El libro <strong><em>\u201cEntre la ingenier\u00eda y el ingeniero\u201d<\/em><\/strong> naci\u00f3 de la insistencia de sus amigos y de un pudor: que sus hijos tengan constancia. No es una bit\u00e1cora. Es un legado con una sola tesis \u2014s\u00ed se puede\u2014 y una tarea pendiente para quien lo lea.
